Project:A Heritage Site Reimagined
Located in Chengdu, China, Dujiangyan is one of the world’s oldest hydraulic engineering systems and the only site recognized simultaneously as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, and World Irrigation Engineering Heritage.
As part of the immersive night tourism project “Dujiangyan · Chengdu”, ROLEDS helped transform this 2,000-year-old heritage landmark into a contemporary cultural destination after dark. By seamlessly integrating architectural lighting, projection, live performances, and interactive storytelling, the project creates an immersive nighttime experience that brings the site’s history and water culture to life while respecting its unique heritage value.
Rather than simply illuminating a heritage site, the project seeks to reveal its cultural spirit.
Inspired by the philosophy of “following nature rather than conquering it”, every lighting intervention respects the site’s original landscape while translating over two millennia of water engineering, Taoist culture and Sichuan traditions into an emotional nighttime experience.
Light becomes the language that connects visitors with history—allowing them not only to see the site, but to feel its stories.
Every scene was carefully composed around the existing landscape.
Using light as ink and water as canvas, the experience unfolds naturally through mountains, ancient architecture, forests and flowing rivers.
Rather than overwhelming the environment with technology, digital media and lighting are seamlessly integrated into the landscape, creating an immersive journey where visitors walk through living stories instead of simply observing them.
Every scene presented different technical and creative challenges—from historic architecture and natural landscapes to irregular sculptures and immersive performance spaces.
Instead of applying a single lighting approach across the entire site, ROLEDS developed customized solutions for each scene, ensuring every space delivered the right visual experience while respecting the site’s cultural and environmental character.
Our integrated solution combines architectural lighting, landscape lighting, projection mapping and intelligent control into one coordinated system—allowing technology to enhance the experience without overwhelming it.
Beyond creative design, the project demanded efficient deployment and reliable long-term operation.
With distributed projection technology, AI-enabled centralized management and flexible content updates, ROLEDS helped deliver a solution that is not only visually compelling, but also easy to manage and maintain throughout its lifecycle.
