The Guangfulin Hezhang Resort is a 4-hectare, mixed-use complex, located on the peripheral edge of the Guangfulin Relics Park, an archaeological site estimated to be over 5,000 years old in Shanghai, China. Historically, this area is known for its rich fish and rice culture, where northern and southern Chinese traditions merged to create a unique way of life.

Embracing the historical context, the resort is constructed by a lake, surrounded by landscaped greenery with lush shrubs and paved footpaths. Its steep, two-sided roofs are covered with terracotta panels, replacing the traditional straw roofing used in ancient times. From above, the wavy roofs resemble the undulating rice fields, gently swaying in the wind. Together, these elements evoke a countryside atmosphere, offering visitors a glimpse into the tranquil life of Guangfulin’s past.

Similar to the construction style, the lighting focuses on enhancing the scenic and peaceful ambiance. A standout feature is the use of changes in light to reflect the passage of time and the rhythms of village life. Inspired by the movement of the sun, the project uses luminaires to mimic how the building’s surfaces respond to sunlight throughout the day. After dark, the lighting gradually shifts to echo these changes.

All the lighting luminaires were chosen and placed with care to ensure harmony in the overall architectural and lighting concept. Roleds linear lights are seamlessly mounted along the roofs to outline their sloping curves, while warm 2700K wall washers are hidden on the facades to create textures. The luminaires’ brightness fades from top to edge, adding depth and subtle variation. Customized anti-glare accessories for the wall washers keep unnecessary light spill to a minimum, ensuring visual comfort and architectural unity. On the entrance, Roleds floodlights and inground products highlight the pillars, drawing attention to the entryway.
